When asked to share what benefits Rob’s Rescue Foundation, Inc. (RRF) enjoyed as a result of participating in the 2015 Giving Challenge, it seemed obvious, it was the donations generated.
In reality, it was so much more than the money. It was a sense of community and a 24 hour roller coaster ride that we didn’t want to get off of!
It was our first time participating in the Giving Challenge, we weren’t quite sure what to expect. We put our hearts and souls into the pre-event prep and when noon struck we started a 24 hour ride that was like no other. The exhilaration of that day compared to the joy of giving birth. Watching the leaderboard and sharing the excitement via texting, phone calls and emailing as we kept the momentum going into the wee hours. We were a TEAM working on a common goal! But it wasn’t just our organization, it was an entire community coming together to support wonderful causes near and dear to our hearts.
Now we won’t lie, the money is pretty awesome!
RRF provides temporary financial support for families with a child undergoing cancer treatment at All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg, Florida. These families often make too much money to receive assistance, but are not earning enough to make ends meet. They need help with utility & cell phone bills, mortgage, rent or car payments, groceries and gas just to name a few. The majority of our funding goes towards the cost of everyday living expenses; however, we also buy wigs and contribute towards funeral expenses.
With the additional funds from the Giving Challenge, we were able to assist more families and make larger payouts.
In the past we’ve limited the assistance to $500 to ensure that help was available to as many families as possible. It feels so good to be able to take the financial stress off of families. To be able to make payments on their behalf, knowing it is allowing them to spend quality time with their child and that they will have electricity and in some instances a roof over their heads at the end of a long day.
Just yesterday we received a thank you from a family that reinforces why we do what we do.
While their daughter was in treatment, Dad had to take a month off of work and mom had to quit her job entirely to commit to their child’s care. RRF was able to pay an entire months worth of bills on their behalf. Mom wrote “Your generosity meant so much and lifted a huge burden. Thank you for being an angel in our darkness. We are forever grateful.”
Without the generosity of RRF Supporters and the 2015 Giving Challenge presented by the Community Foundation of Sarasota County and with giving strengthened by The Patterson Foundation as well as support from Manatee Community Foundation, John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, William G. and Marie Selby Foundation and Herald Tribune Media Group, we would not have been able to provide the same level of support to this family.
Current statistics say that more than 40,000 children undergo cancer treatment annually.
With the rising costs of healthcare and living expenses, RRF is receiving larger numbers of requests for assistance than ever before. We are proud that we have never turned down a request. That’s due to our foundation being run purely by volunteers, with $0 overhead or debt. That means 100% of our donations go towards supporting families in need. Each year we host a fundraising event to bring our supporters together for a social evening. It gives us a chance to thank them in person for their continuing support and share how their donations have impacted the families we serve.
That is why we LOVE the #GivingChallenge16 theme, #BetheOne. September 20th – 21st, noon to noon, everyone has a chance to be a philanthropist and “Be the One” to make a difference! We don’t want to give away all the fun in store during the event, just know that you can “Be the One” to double or triple your donation with Matching Grants from The Patterson Foundation. All contributions of $25 – $100 will be matched as 1:1 for Returning Donors and 2:1 for New Donors!
